Sport Ireland Coaching Workshops

Understanding Physical Literacy Workshop

PHYSICAL LITERACY: a gateway to lifelong participation in physical activity

For coaches, teachers, trainers & parents – everybody involved in the delivery of sport and physical activity

Physical literacy relates to a person’s relationship with physical activity and movement. A person who is developing their physical literacy will be motivated, confident and physically competent when moving and they will know and understand movement.

Physical literacy applies across the life course.

If you want to learn more about physical literacy for your personal use or you want to apply it in your role of supporting others to be physically active, the ‘Understanding Physical Literacy’ workshop is for you.

Coaches who previously completed the course said this:

  • My coaching style has changed to reflect a player-centered approach, it’s the reminder to keep coming back to this and keep asking myself – how is this benefiting the child.

  • The course is a must for any volunteer before they get stuck into the skills of any one sport.

  • A great course if you want to understand who you are coaching.

  • My mindset was very much concentrated on drills. The course was an eye opener for me in that it showed me you need to have an element of fun or even a play activity that’s completely different to the sport to encourage the kids to practice freedom of movement rather than stick to rigid techniques of how skills should be practiced.

  • Coaching children workshops have been really insightful and provided me with an ever-improving approach to understanding and applying my coach education to practice with young people in sport.

  • I am definitely much more confident in my delivery of providing activities to children of all ages & levels. My listing & observation skills have also improved greatly which helps me if required to adapt and make changes during activities themselves.
